Before you travel to Canada, or anywhere really it’s always a good idea to get some facts about where you’re going and what you really will need to know before you actually get there!  So on this page we’re trying to help you find out all the important information you’ll need to know..

When you’re flying to Canada – you will need to fill in a customs card – so a good tip is to take a pen with you in your hand luggage, it saves borrowing or buying one when you’re on the plane!

If you’re intending on hiring a car in Canada, there are some differences to the law of the road in Canada, compared to the UK:

  • You may (or may not) be supprised to know that Canada uses the metric system – just like Europe – so everywhere uses Kmh and not mph for speeds and distances – so when you’re heading up the 401 north from Toronto and you’re pulled over by the police for doing 100mph after following the signs – you’ll know why! – remember 100 means 100kmh
  • You drive on the right in canada!
  • Traffic Lights..
    • If you’re stood at a stop light, indicating to turn right and everyone behind you is beeping their horn at you – this is because in most of Canada you can turn right on a red light (excluding Montreal) – providing it is safe and clear to do so. You will occasionally find signs which tell you you can’t though so keep an eye out for these
    • Trafficlights go straight from red to green with no stage between
    • Occasionally you may find when the lights change the green light flashes – this means priority to people turning left
  • If you see an emergancy vehicle coming towards you or coming up behind you – No matter which direction you MUST pull into the gravel siding at the side of the road – even if the road is dead.

The Emergancy Services number in Canada is 911
