Well today – I’m going to focus on what foods you can and cant take into Canada.
Like when ever you are travelling from the UK, it’s always good to make sure you’re going to another country – without breaking any rules, regulations or Laws the moment you step into the country right? And lets face it, after an 8 hour flight, the last thing you need to start your holiday – is a royal telling off from the immigration authorities!
Here’s my most useful tip.. If you can, just don’t take any food items into Canada :)
This helpful line will help keep you stress free, and keep you from treading into a whole minefield of rules about what is and isn’t permitted.. Not only are the rules (for any country) a pain already to really get your head round – but the rules change depending on the different types of health scares that may be present in any country at any given time!

So – if you are going to take food – what can you actually take? The EU has a whole set of rules, but Canada is not in the EU – so these rules are different. Whatever you do, do not use the EU laws on moving foods around different countries in the EU like Spain or France – to decide on what you’re taking.
The best places to find out what you can or cannot take is at the following resource: http://www.pensez-y.gc.ca/english/brirape.shtml#a2. (more…)

Ok, It’s a little off topic.. well ok it’s very off topic, but as we have as many readers in Canada as we have in the UK, i thought i could put a one off article about something that happens in the UK on the 5th of November.

Each year, if you’re in the UK on November 5th, you’ll be witness to one of what many people consider only a few nationally celebrated ‘holidays’ – Like Halloween, its not a true public holiday, since no one has the day off, however it’s in the same category ~ even down to the fact it’s celebrated at night. The reason why i can guarantee you being witness to it – is simply because the majority of people in the UK are likely to light fireworks, so cities erupt into a huge mass of glittery multicoloured explosions which boom out across even the countryside for miles! You’ll also catch, more or less wherever you are in England the smell of smoke – as its part of the whole night to light a fire.. It also happens to be my favourite ‘holiday’ of the year, even beating Christmas!

But why? What’s it about? Well like more or less everything in the UK, its all linked back into history.

There’s two historical reasons as to why it all happens, and the first is actually linked up with Halloween. Good old wikipedia says this in relation to the ancient celebration of Samhain [which became Halloween]: “In Scotland the spirits were impersonated by young men dressed in white with masked, veiled or blackened faces. Samhain was also a time to take stock of food supplies and slaughter livestock for winter stores. Bonfires played a large part in the festivities. All other fires were doused and each home lit their hearth from the bonfire. The bones of slaughtered livestock were cast into its flames.Sometimes two bonfires would be built side-by-side, and people and their livestock would walk between them as a cleansing ritual.”

The Bonfires continued through history, around the 31st of October until 1605 when the second, and most significant part to the history of Guy Fawkes Night story happened. (more…)

Halloween in Canada

Author: Rocky

Well as it’s Halloween on Sunday i thought I’d do a little Halloween feature!
Halloween IS getting bigger in the UK, especially in the last 10 years, but Halloween in Canada, similar to the US is significantly more widely enjoyed! From Halloween house decorations, Halloween foods and candies, to Halloween greetings Cards, Halloween in Canada is a big deal. And like any day which is enjoyed, some in Canada think it should be a public holiday so it can be enjoyed that little bit more!

A Halloween Carved Pumpkin

We went to Canada earlier this month, and found it in stages of preparation for both Thanksgiving and Halloween. The UK, although credited for having been part of the birth place for the celebration, has in recent times been rather half hearted with the ‘holiday’, and although retail companies are now beginning to jump onto the Halloween bandwagon, we still see a lot of the same old same old ~ a familiar chocolate bar, simply given a spooky wrapper, or a half one sided isle in the supermarkets while the entire other side holds Christmas goodies already in preparation for December.. Christmas and Halloween all on the same isle, not exactly the most complimentary combination – but that’s the reality of it

I went to a Walmart in Ontario this month, and! (more…)

Well, regular readers may know, I’ve only recently returned from Canada a couple of weeks ago. One of the main reasons for going, was to visit Canada, in the month which gave it it’s well known red and white flag ~ Autumn or – Fall.
If there was a country which symbolised a season, Canada would certainly be the country which symbolised Autumn. We decided to go to Canada in the first full week of October, generally it and the following week is the best advised week to go if you want to see fall colour in Ontario – but this is open to speculation as the change in colour can be late or early depending on the year, but this was the week we chose – and it turned out to be perfect.

First let’s think of autumn in the UK. If we were to think of autumnal colours here, we’d think of browns, and yellows, and very very occasionally browny orange and red. In Canada, it would be Yellow, Orange and Red. After seeing what I’ve seen in Canada, even some of the most brightly coloured trees at home here in the UK, are paled into insignificance by the brilliance of the colours that can be seen at this time of year in Canada. The leaves there seem to almost emit light, rather than just reflect it – in dazzling arrays of oranges, yellows and of coarse brilliantly bright red. (more…)

Happy Thanksgiving 2010!

Author: Rocky

Well, its the second monday in October, so that means its Thanksgiving in Canada!
Thanksgiving in Canada occurring on the second Monday in October, is an annual Canadian holiday to give thanks at the close of the harvest season. Although the original act of Parliament references God and the holiday is celebrated in churches, the holiday is also celebrated in a secular manner. It’s best considered therefore to be similar to the UK’s own harvest festivals, though this unfortunately for us is NOT a bank holiday!

Thanksgiving is a statutory holiday in most jurisdictions of Canada, with the provinces of Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Nova Scotia being the exceptions. Where a company is regulated by the federal government (such as those in the telecommunications and banking sectors), it is recognized regardless of status provincially.

Thanksgiving corresponds to the English and continental European Harvest festival, with churches decorated with cornucopias, pumpkins, corn, wheat sheaves, and other harvest bounty, English and European harvest hymns sung on the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend and scriptural selections drawn from biblical stories relating to the Jewish harvest festival of Sukkot.
