Hi Paul! Huntsville! effectively one of the gateways to Algonquin Park :) - I'm currently at work and on my desk a Canada themed mug from the Walmart in Huntsville! With us now being based round Sundridge when we're over, its one of the closest towns for major stores - and a nice place too! .. also more importantly its our closest DQ and Wendy's ;)

Thanks for your comments! - they really help drive me on, knowing that people find the things i feature interesting and useful!

Our next trip out is in early March - looking forward to the winter weather (hopefully.. must take winter photos..) myself - And you're obviously right, March can quite often still be wintery with snow, ice and cold tempretures.

Thanks again :)

Stumbled upon your web site.
Nice to see you promoting Canada, I live in Huntsville, use to live in Gravenhurst.
Hope you keep up the great work.
Read about a guy going to Montreal in March, remind him that it can still be winter weather (not as cold as January). I usually go skiing 45 min north for springskiing.

we have been to niagara falls at the canedian side. If we had known before we surely had picked a hotel in Niagara on the lake. What a nice town and a nice surrounding to spent time. We liked it very much. It looked like you stepped back in time.

This place is built on the site that used to be Grant's General Store. My great grandparents owned the store & Inn way back when....then my great Aunt Mable ran things until she passed away in the 70's. Some new people bought the place and ran it as an Inn - not changing a thing - all the old family photos remained intact as well as the furnishings. It was like a trip back in time the last time I visited (2001 I think?) Then unfortunatley someone decided to raze the whole place, So terribly sad. The place was a landmark - had been there for well over 100 years. Now this new place has been built. I hear it's very nice & that the owner is very friendly. I live in new York but hope to get up there sometime soon. I'm afraid I'll cry to see Grant's all gone though. So many memories....

Hi Robyn :) - I wish i had raccoons in my garden! - - But to answer your question, if raccoons are left alone to do their thing, there shouldnt be any real harm in raccoons visiting your garden. Putting food out obviously would be good for the raccoons, but you'd probably end up with a few more - and the advice is to never put it out too regularly or they get too dependent on the food source - so an odd treat now and then would be a better idea. In cities, Raccoons often dont actually venture *that* far - a study in toronto suggested they only really stick to the block they're in - using roads as boundries - if you live somewhere more rural, round farmland or woods, then it may be that there wasnt too much food in its usual spots so - it came to have a look somewhere else, and if there wasnt much food to find it may not come back too often anyway.

In general, raccoon are harmless if you let them be. If it was me, i would probably put food out and get him or her to come back, but for safty's sake, as i havent seen the raccoon myself (so cant tell what it's health is like) i'd reccomend just leaving it alone. Raccoons are really interesting and intelligent animals - and if they're healthy, they dont usually hurt anyone unless theyre cornered or threatened. Lots and lots of people have raccoons pay a visit to their gardens every night without any problem so, for your mom, the following advice is best:

*Dont approach and leave it be and you should be trouble free
*If you spot raccoon scat on your garden, wear a dust-mask and put on gloves before removing it safely to a place where kids cant accidentally touch it and always remember to rinse any tools you use after doing it, as like a lot of wild animal scat, it can have some nasty things which you wont want to get in contact with.

Other than that, relax, and enjoy his or her visit :) Raccoons can be very fun to watch!
