Toronto Zoo, ON

There are only a few of the top zoos in the world, but Toronto Zoo is certainly among them. This enormous zoo is situated in the Scarborough region – not to be confused with the coastal town of Scarborough in the UK!
Toronto zoo is one of the must see locations on your trip if you’re in the Toronto region – though remember to give yourself a whole day to look around this amazing place – When i visited in May, it was a beautiful sunny day, we got there in the morning and still didn’t quite get to see everything in the zoo.

Toronto zoo is laid out in different regions of the world; Indo-Malaya, Africa, the Americas, Australasia, Eurasia and the Canadian Domain, as if when you’re walking around the zoo, it is as if you are getting to walk around the world. There are, as you can see in the photo above some masterfully created inside enclosures, with free flying tropical birds, plants, waterfalls and wildlife roaming them – though not to be thought as any less significant are the immense areas set outside, for the big cats, giraffes, zebras, moose and all the other animals the zoo offers.

Certainly one of the most amazing experiences i had at Toronto zoo on that day was down in the Canadian Domain section of the zoo – where you get to see raccoons and other native species to Canada. In this section you will find the Grizzly Bear enclosure – it is designed so that you can get within 1 foot of the bears themselves if you are lucky – and on this day i was. After 5 minutes of taking photos of the bears enjoying a nap in the sun, they got up – the female padded into the pool, and the male came over to investigate the rocks by the front of the glass fronted enclosure which we were observing from.

Toronto zoo has everything you’d ever need – and even with its vast size, there are always places for refreshments as well as full restaurants even in the furthest corners of the zoo when you literally think that you must have walked somewhere into the wilderness you have gone so far.
The zoo also offers a land train service which you would pay for at admissions and you can hop on and off as you go on your adventure around the zoo – so if your legs aren’t necessarily feeling up to a good walk the day you visit you can always opt for this!

Another of my favourite spots in this zoo was the great barrier reef area, i wish i could post one of my photos of the Moon jellyfish, who’s exhibit is sited towards the exit of the barrier reef zone, though they provide you with a small place to rest your legs while listening to some relaxing sounds – and all while you’re watching the gentle motion of the jellyfish, illuminated against the black background of their tank slowly pulse their way around the tank.

The zoo is open this year at the following times:
May 16 – Sep 7 9:00 am – 7:30 pm 6:30 pm
Sep 8 – Oct 12 9:00 am – 6:00 pm 5:00 pm
Oct 13 – Dec 31 9:30 am – 4:30 pm 3:30 pm

For admission prices, updated opening hours as well as seeing the masses more of what the zoo has to offer visit their website at http://www.torontozoo.com/. And remember when you look at the admission prices, canadian dollars are always at very favourable rates against the £ – and for the price you will pay, it is certainly worth every penny.
